“Is this darkness in you, too?
Have you passed through this night?”

                                            -Explosions In The Sky

Have You Passed Through This Night? is a sculptural installation that walks the subtle line between the natural and the artificial; the playful and the malignant; the real and the imagined.

Bulging protuberances cluster in small heaps on the floor. Human fingers emerge from snail shells, reaching out to explore the room. A patch of hair gives life to unassuming architecture, accentuating an eyelid asleep inside the wall.

The work is rooted in an infatuation with nature, gut reactions to social and environmental issues, and my own personal history, along with an exploration of the absurd or impossible.

Sasha Cohen's MFA Thesis Show

April 8th-12th

Reception: TOMORROW!!! Thursday April 11th, 6-9pm

‪I work improvisationally, assembling, layering, ripping, stretching, and embracing chance. When I’m painting, maneuvering fabrics, re-contextualizing found objects, and restaging my studio, the elements are non-hierarchical; no single part leads or dominates. With a strong sense of materiality and a brutish, unpolished aesthetic, I join parts together and destroy others, constantly responding to the material relationships that emerge. Abstract forms combine and invite open interpretations.

1,2,3,4 Opening This Thursday, April 4th, 6pm-9pm!

2 CCNY current MFA students, Sasha Cohen and Katie Simpson Spain, and 2 CCNY alumni, Peter Fankhauser and Nancy Susan Woods, are in a show together, curated by Risa Shoup at Gallery 200, 111 Front St. in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

Rather than focus on formal connections between the work, the four artists represented in 1,2,3,4 respond instead to the shared experience of producing work in the institution that links them all together. To underscore the ethos of accessibility for which CUNY is well known, the show will be divided into four separate spaces and each artist’s work will inhabit one of these four spaces, creating a straight forward and uncontrived point of entry into each artist’s universe.

Risa Shoup is the Associate Director of The Invisible Dog Art Center, Brooklyn. She works to provide artists with the financial and workspace resources they need to create work that the public can experience in non-traditional spaces. She is currently a Fellow at the Pratt Center for Community Development and a MS in City &Regional Planning candidate at the Pratt Institute. Shoup studies the production of space for housing, manufacturing and other forms of production.

On view through April 28th

Studio Art MFA Thesis Show

Reception Wednesday March 20th, 6-8:30 pm

Meet & Greet Thursday March 21st, 5-6 pm

Compton-Goethals Gallery
Compton-Goethals Hall, room 134
The City College of New York
160 Convent Ave.
New York, NY 10031

Focusing on methods of navigation in nature, this installation combines recycled materials, fabrics, painting, sculpture, video, live plants and printmaking to create a strange mapped and staged situation. This work examines organized outdoor activities, exploring relationships people have with the natural environment, and the trappings of preparation for these relationships. I am interested in the thin membranes of safety that lie between the natural world and organized modern life. You are invited to experience this version of nature, re-creations of natural environments and recreational activities, from the safety of Compton-Goethals Gallery.
