City's Six at One Art Space, Reception August 1, 2013

City's Six
City College MFA Group Show

August 1st through 22nd, 2013

One Art Space Gallery
23 Warren Street (between Church and Broadway)

Opening Reception Thursday, August 1, 6-9 pm.

One Art Space Gallery is pleased to present City’s Six, a group exhibition of New York City based artists publicly showcasing their artwork together for the first time. The artists: Sasha Cohen, Andrea Coronil, Gayla Martin, Shannon McBride, Katie Simpson Spain and Alison White are the City College of New York’s MFA Spring 2013 graduating class. Each artist relates to her materials differently, but seen as a group, the work creates a dialogue based on viewer interaction and exploration of environments.

Sasha Cohen, Gayla Martin and Alison White play with the idea of hanging and draping in unique ways to explore space. Cohen’s paintings become three dimensional objects with the inclusion of fabric and her manipulation of the surface, while Martin’s hanging thread sculptures act more like simple line drawings that portray an intimate attention to detail. White’s fabric sculptures are complex compositions that evoke a sense of chaotic, yet ordered beauty.

Shannon McBride, Katie Simpson Spain and Andrea Coronil invite viewers to examine the plays with illusion in their work. McBride's sculptures seem at first recognizable and familiar, like fruits or commonplace objects, but upon close inspection reveal subtle distortions of reality. Simpson Spain, on the other hand, develops invitingly warm spaces that remind the viewer of past experiences: camping trips, Girl Scout troops, late nights, and explorations. Coronil paints iconic images of boxers and organs, and imbues them with personal narratives of loss and transcendence that are both transparent and layered.

Together this group of artists compose varied atmospheres full of playful inquisitiveness, reminders of past experiences, and an intimate attention to detail. The curators celebrate and admire each of the artists and their work. City’s Six is curated by Blake Ruehrwein and Stephanie Crawford, respectively a graduate and a candidate from the Masters in Art History program at the City College of New York. The exhibition is a launching pad for both the artists and the curators at this stage in their careers.

“Is this darkness in you, too?
Have you passed through this night?”

                                            -Explosions In The Sky

Have You Passed Through This Night? is a sculptural installation that walks the subtle line between the natural and the artificial; the playful and the malignant; the real and the imagined.

Bulging protuberances cluster in small heaps on the floor. Human fingers emerge from snail shells, reaching out to explore the room. A patch of hair gives life to unassuming architecture, accentuating an eyelid asleep inside the wall.

The work is rooted in an infatuation with nature, gut reactions to social and environmental issues, and my own personal history, along with an exploration of the absurd or impossible.

Studio Art MFA Thesis Show

Reception Wednesday March 20th, 6-8:30 pm

Meet & Greet Thursday March 21st, 5-6 pm

Compton-Goethals Gallery
Compton-Goethals Hall, room 134
The City College of New York
160 Convent Ave.
New York, NY 10031

Focusing on methods of navigation in nature, this installation combines recycled materials, fabrics, painting, sculpture, video, live plants and printmaking to create a strange mapped and staged situation. This work examines organized outdoor activities, exploring relationships people have with the natural environment, and the trappings of preparation for these relationships. I am interested in the thin membranes of safety that lie between the natural world and organized modern life. You are invited to experience this version of nature, re-creations of natural environments and recreational activities, from the safety of Compton-Goethals Gallery.

Constructed Impressions
Gayla Martin
MFA Thesis Exhibition
March 11th – 15th

Reception Wednesday, March 13th 5-8:30pm
Workshop Friday, March 15th 1-5pm

Sculptures form impressions of space outlined with thread. The fragile and visually permeable tubes appear as shadows of solid structural forms. In addition to responding to the gallery the installation is a three-dimensional drawing within the confines of four walls.  Activation of the work includes the transference of movement, through a breeze, from body to sculpture and in involving the viewer with the seats.  I draw connections to meditation and relaxation to my process and the experience.  Low profile wooden seats are situated throughout the gallery where viewers may rest, and experience the installation from a different vantage point. Friday, March 15th, from 1pm-5pm I will activate the project room as a workshop/performance space where I will weave on my handmade loom. It will be interactive in that I will respond to any questions posed by viewers.

Andrea Coronil's MFA Thesis show

Sabes tanto que sabes a Casabe
We know so much, we know so little

Reception: Thursday March 7th, 5-9pm
Show dates: March 4-8th, 9-5pm

Location: Compton Goethals Gallery, The City College of New York CUNY

This show draws from uncertain certainties in life: sickness, death, and loss. These are experiences that we all live yet cannot plan or know how they will come.  The work includes paintings that act as projections when light is cast through them. Rooted in the idea of fighting illness and the struggle to survive, the boxers in the paintings refer to the celebratory yet combative daily dances we engage in to get well.

City Editions

Hi!

The semester has started and things are getting exciting at City College! Some students from our program are working on a great printmaking project with artist Nicola Lopez. The program, City Editions, was started by Megan Foster, a fabulous painter and printmaker who's been a master printer for lots of artists you've heard of, and this is the second year the program is editioning prints with a visiting artist.

It's really fun!

Here are some pictures.

PS The CCNY Studio Art MFA program deadline has been extended to Feb 15th because of magical glitches in the whole CUNY system, you should apply! It's totally awesome!
